2001
OK, the 2001 Gigacar testrun was quite a success, a more detailed report
will follow... After some starting difficulties we had almost everything
we planned running, including:
- Internet using two mobile phones, an ericsson R600 prototype for GPRS and a Siemens S45 for normal CSD Data.
- Cross Car Wavelan using a Lucent Basestation II with two Orinioco cards on different channels, one for the yagi in the back and one for the omni antenna
in the side window. Using this setup people in the second car could connect
into our network from as far as 200m behind us and up to 50m in front
of us without own antennas.
- The GPS connected to the gpsd so multiple applications, for example
logging and gpsdrive mapping could access it, even in the second car.
Live download of maps from the net was a bit slow but worked...
- An IRC Chatserver connected to an external IRC network over the GPRS
link. The perfect application for GPRS even with the extremely high
volume prices in Germany.
It was so much fun that we forgot to photograph everything for the
documentation, but here two parts of the setup:

The Lucent Yagi Antenna in the Back (the white thing in the middle of the
rear window). I had the impression following cars
are a bit irritated by such a thing pointing directly at them :>

GPS Antenna, Ericsson R600 and Magellan GPS mounted in the front.
